Gnolls are a humanoid race of kaynids resembling a mix of jackal and wolf. They stand upright on double bent legs, have short tails, and have vestigial claws on their paw like feet and humanoid hands. The head is somewhere between human and kaynine with a short muzzel with wolf like teeth, a skull case big enough for a humanoid brain, and upright pointed ears.
There are two distinct sub-races of gnolls. Desert gnolls live in the arid regions of Naraj and Zaratul and have short tawny fur with black markings. Northern gnolls live in the cold northern reaches of Ershad, Naraj, and the Far East and have long thick fur in gray, brown, or black.
Gnolls tend to be ill tempered and hostile. They’re not overly expansionist generally, but they are territorial and violent. They tend to view non-gnolls as threats and sources of plunder.
It’s not certain, but it is suspected that the gnolls may have been created by magical mutation to be a servitor race early in the Age of Legends by some forgotten wizard or empire. Ancient myths from around the Middle Seas region would seem to support this theory. Also, elves and dwarves had no account of gnolls from the Elder Ages.
